Hawthorn Primary School

Hawthorn Primary School

Hawthorn is a small school in the West End of Newcastle upon Tyne. We have 210 children in our mainstream classes - we take 30 children in each year into the Reception class; and 12 children in our Additionally Resourced Centre (ARC) for children with Emotional, Social or Behavioural Difficulties.

Our building is quirky and can be hard to find tucked off Elswick Road but we pride ourselves on its warm and welcoming atmosphere and excellent relationships with our families and the other professionals we work with.

We believe in Inclusion in all its forms, we welcome children into our ARC who have struggled at other schools and provide excellent support for children with a huge variety of Special Educational Needs. Our population is very mixed which gives our school a rich and tolerant profile; we have been delighted to welcome families from all round the world, often supporting them as they start a new life in the UK.

We have beautiful grounds, including grass to play on; a brand new Multi Games Area (sponsored by Sport England) a wild wood, a vegetable patch and an orchard. Our school has been described as an “oasis”. Children make exceptional progress as they move through the school at or exceeding national averages. Our latest Ofsted Inspection rated us Good with Outstanding features.

The staff at Hawthorn are extremely dedicated and work hard to ensure children enjoy coming to school every day, we want to give children new experiences, prepare them for secondary school and give them a desire for learning that will last them their whole life. We work hard to include parents in their children’s education providing workshops and encouraging parents into school. We have a Breakfast Club and many and varied after school clubs from swimming to cooking.

Since 2012 we have been working with the Sage Gateshead and the Royal Northern Sinfonia Orchestra on the In Harmony project. We are one of only 6 schools in the country where every child is taught a musical instrument and has music lessons every day. We have discovered some real talent and I am proudest of the Hawthorn Primary Symphony Orchestra made up of around 60 of the children.
