A Place in the Community
Canning Street is a unique school situated in the inner-west of Newcastle and draws children from Benwell, Elswick and West City. Our vibrant, modern school is at the heart of the local community and is often referred to as being ‘an oasis’. The school serves a very diverse population comprising a wide range of ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds. This area of the city is well-served by a range of community support groups and services. The school works in close partnership with these groups and has excellent relationships with the Local Authority, voluntary and emergency services.
High Expectations and Positive Relationships
We expect parents and carers to make sure that their child comes to school on time every day, dressed in school uniform and with the right equipment for lessons such as PE and music tuition.
We aim to provide a safe, pleasant, happy, secure and interesting environment in which all children can achieve. We aim to develop respect and positive attitudes towards each other. We aim to ensure that learning is an exciting, stimulating and challenging experience for all children. We aim to prepare children to become responsible and contributing members of the community. We believe that discipline should be based upon firm, fair, consistent and caring approaches. We strive to provide a wide range of learning opportunities based upon the local environment, first hand experience, observation and problem solving. We aim to ensure very high standards of children’s behaviour and educational achievements. We aim to further the social, emotional, intellectual, physical, educational, and spiritual development of each child.
Working together
We know that children make the best progress when there is a real partnership between parents /carers and teachers. We welcome constructive comments and suggestions and have an “open door” policy for parents/carers to come and talk about their child with a member of staff. There are parent/carer & teacher sessions each term at which children’s progress and targets are discussed. Each child also receives an annual written report in July. Parents /carers are invited to attend assemblies, concerts and other special events throughout the year so that they can share with us their children's achievements. Some parents come into school to help out in class or on educational visits and we welcome all volunteers subject to safeguarding checks.
A little extra
We have a range of effective systems and programmes to support your child's learning and progress. This can range from the little extra help with reading or maths, right through to requesting advice from experts such as educational psychologists, speech therapists and other specialists. We will always work with you if we feel that your child needs additional support or further assessment so that you feel fully informed and have a strong voice - after all, you know your child best.
